Mindfulness meditation for the real world

‘Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally’ Jon Kabat-Zinn

Mindfulness offers us a compassionate way to be present in a challenging world, but meditation is often taught with strict rules: a certain way and place to sit, still, with eyes closed. But there are other ways of practicing, facilitating meditative spaces, and teaching meditation.

You can meditate while walking, cooking, or listening to music. You don’t need to ‘progress’ to stillness and silence unless you want to. In fact, for some people, that kind of practice isn’t helpful, or available to them.

Taught from a trauma informed perspective, taking into account people’s individual needs, histories and motivations, Najia and Katie show you ways to weave meditation into your own lives. Katie brings lived experience of PTSD and trauma as well as training in trauma sensitivity to this progressive course.

We will work together collaboratively to support you to explore and discover your own mindfulness. Part two of this training takes this practice further, exploring ways to confidently bring mindfulness meditation into groups and classes. You can take part one, part two or both.

Part one: Starting a practice

Introduction to mindfulness meditation: working with movement, sound, breath and choice this first part of the course is aimed at everyone. Learn how to practice a gentler style of mindfulness meditation

Part two: Making meditative spaces

For spaceholders and group facilitators: learn how to bring this practice into your groups and classes. Deepen your knowledge of these practices and take these teachings into your spaces in an ethical way, staying within your scope of practice.

Najia is a yoga teacher, artist and creative learning curator. She passed her Master’s Degree with Distinction from Goldsmiths College in 2019 with a focus on listening and improvisation. She has over 10 years experience in delivering workshops and facilitating group learning, covering creative play, deep listening, yoga and meditation. Najia has worked with Tate, University of Oxford, South London Gallery, MoreYoga, and of course Every Body Studio where she teaches regular classes. She likes to move and listen to music and finds that a moving meditation practice helps to calm her busy mind.

Katie is a yoga teacher and coach. She spent years thinking, and being told, that not being able to sit still and meditate meant she was failing at it. She is the founder of Every Body Studio and coaches at helmcollective.co.uk
